CAPOEIRA: Classes will not be on this Friday as the school is closed at 12noon.

IRISH DANCING: The last two weeks for Irish Dancing are 13th, 14th April & 20th ,21st April.

SCHOOL CLOSED: Finish tomorrow at noon, and return 13th April. Healthy lunches as always tomorrow please.

LOST AND FOUND: We shall put out Lost and found items in the sheds tomorrow morning and at collections time (12noon). There are quite a lot of unclaimed items.

COMMUNITY: We have been notified about an Athletics Camp running from Mon 30th March to 2sd April & Tuesday 7th to 10th April in Chapelizod Harriers Club House. 5yrs plus, €50 per week. Call 086 0846 121 for details.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION: The Parents Association Committee would like to thank all the volunteers who helped out at our movie night on Saturday evening last. We will be in touch about upcoming fundraising events in Term 3 but for now enjoy the Spring Break.

ETHOS: Check out the ECLIPSE pictures in THE GALLERY. We didn’t need the flash or the glasses, but the children had a great time learning about the cosmos, making balloon rockets and doing space art in the yard while listening to some spaced out music. Happy ‘Big Bang Day’, which is celebrated tomorrow.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION: Movie Night this Saturday details:

TIME: Junior Infants @ 5pm – 6.30pm (A selection of short animated films)

Senior, 1st, 2nd, 3rd @ 5pm to 7pm (The Croods)

WHERE: In the school – Canal Way ETNS, Basin Street Upper.

GOODY BAG: €5 per child

POP UP CAFÉ: Adults can have coffee in the hall where there will be a play area for the younger siblings. Please bring goodies, savoury or sweet, to sell at the cafe.

VOLUNTEERS: Please volunteer to help out by contacting parentspetns@gmail.com or by phone.

Funds raised will help funding for the next phase of the works to improve the overall aesthetic environment of the school for our children. Don’t forget to bring goodies, savoury or sweet, to sell at the café.

SCHOOL CLOSURE: School closes next week on Friday at 12.00hrs. Re-opens on the 13th of April 2015.

COMMUNITY: South Pacific is showing in St Agnes’s, Armagh Road (St Agnes’s Musical Society.) This show has an anti-racism theme. Great reports on this by all accounts. Showing Fri 20th, @ 7.30 , Sat @ 3pm and 7.30 & Sunday @ 7.30pm. Tickets €10 & €5 and café open an hour before.

THANKYOU: Thanks and Best Wishes to Nicky, who was on teaching practice with us for the last month. Senior infants really enjoyed having her teach them, and they will miss her for sure.

Welcome to this week’s Newsletter –

ETHOS: We hope you enjoy celebrating Patrick’s Day next week. We will have a Céilí Dance for the children in the hall on Monday with live music – fiddle, pipes, & box. If any more musicians want to come along and join in the session, please contact the office.

SOLAR ECLIPSE: We will be observing a partial solar eclipse on Friday.` The eclipse will begin at around 8:24 am Irish time, with the totality, or maximum point of the eclipse hitting around 9:29am. The event will end around 10:37 am. Hopefully we will have clear sky to observe the eclipse.

We are planning a very active morning for the eclipse. The children will be making viewing boxes, so please send in empty cereal boxes before Friday for this science activity. Also, if anyone has a special interest or ideas that they would like to contribute, please volunteer to help out on Friday morning. Or just volunteer anyhow, and come in and help out. Contact your class teacher.

ACTIVE SCHOOLS: Thanks to all who have volunteered to be on the organising committee, Fiona is looking forward to meeting next week.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION: Movie Night will take place at our school on Saturday 21st March from 5pm – 6.30pm for Junior infant classes and 5pm to 7 pm for Hazel and Aodans’ classes. Our goody bag will cost €5 per child and will help raise some much needed funding for the next phase of the works to improve the overall aesthetic environment of the school for our children. We will have a pop-up cafe in the hall with a play area for younger siblings. If you are interested in helping out  please contact Irenie at parentspetns@gmail.com or by phone.  Please bring goodies, savoury or sweet, to sell at the cafe. Details of the movies being shown will be sent out early next week.

On behalf of the Parents Association Committee we would like to thank all parents who helped run a coffee morning last week. In particular, we would like to thank Reiltin Feely for driving this event.  We hope to run at least one more coffee morning in term three.  Many thanks for all your support as always

TEACHING AND LEARNING: Thanks to everyone for coming in to our student led conferences over the last two weeks. They were very successful and the feedback has been really positive.

Hazel has made a trip to The Ark today and Aodán’s class has gone to visit an art exhibition and will be meeting the artist. Thanks to Michelle who came into Wilma’s class to do a ‘printing lesson’.

PHOTOGRAPHER: We will be having our school photographer visiting on Wednesday 18th to take pictures of the children. All children will be photographed and you can decide if you want to purchase the photographs after. So please remember to give the children a ‘scrubbing-up’ for Wednesday!


  • Capoeira classes will take place each Friday for the next four weeks. There will be a class at 1:15 and another at 2:15. There was a great turnout for the early class last week but there are still some places available. The second class has about 6 participants and it would be great for all if we could increase this number. If there is sufficient demand the classes will be extended beyond the four week period.
  • There will be no Irish Dancing next week. Irish dancing will be on the the 23rd and 24th of March and dancing will continue after the Easter holidays.

POD: Thank-you to those who have returned the POD forms. The part of the form that we passed onto you is the ‘compulsory page’. There are some still outstanding and we will be contacting you directly if you do not return them before next week.

REMINDER – School closes on Friday 27th March at 12-noon for Spring holidays. School re-opens on Monday 13th April.

NEWSLETTER 05.03.2015

Welcome to this week’s newsletter:

TEACHING AND LEARNING: Today we have enjoyed World Book Day. We listened to Prince Cinders by Babette Cole and The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf at assembly.

Children in Wilma’s class wrote a book to celebrate the day. Their book is about dinosaurs coming to school.

Aodan, Hazel and Fiona’s classes enjoyed an Aesop’s Fable about the Crow and the Fox. Children compared an old version of the story with a new recording of the story by Julia Donaldson. Children also explored ‘Where the forest meets the Sea’ by Jeannie Baker. Children visualised themselves in different parts of the story.

Seachtain na Gaeilge activities will be starting next week – Beimid ag ceiliuradh Seachtain na Gaeilge i rith an seachtain seo chugainn sa scoil. Beidh ar na paisti Gaeilge a labhairt agus beimid ‘reeling’ agus ‘jigging’ i rith an seachtain.

PUPIL LED CONFERENCING: Thanks to all the adults who came to the meetings this week to celebrate children’s learning. Hazel and Fiona are looking forward to hosting them next week.

ACTIVE SCHOOLS WEEK: will be taking place on the 11th to the 15th of May. Fiona is looking for volunteers to meet to plan this event. Please email fiona@portobelloetns.org if you are interested in joining the committee. The committee will be meeting on Thursday 19th of March to plan the week. There will be lots of opportunities for parents to participate during the week in May.


Reminder:  Parents Coffee morning is taking place in the hall tomorrow morning from 8.30 – 9.30.

School Disco: Kate, Sinead and Jessie would like to thank everyone who helped to make the school disco on Saturday 28th such a success.  Thanks to those who volunteered to do specific jobs, and also to those who pitched in at the end when we were putting everything away.  Many hands definitely made light work of that job, and just made a great event even better. Your support made for a great atmosphere.

Movie Night:We are holding another movie night for the children of our school on Saturday 21st March, more details to follow.

Sponsored Walk: We are also starting to prepare for a sponsored walk which will take place in May. We will need your help with organising and running these events.  Please e-mail Irenie at parentspetns@gmail.com or just pass on your details to a member of the Parents Association Committee if you would like to get involved. BOARD OF MANAGEMENT met on Thursday 26 February and discussed a range of items including refurbishments needed for our great school building. The Board welcomed the extracurricular activities which have recently been made available to students. They also agreed on the need to put together a menu of extracurricular activities to be communicated to parents early on in the next school year (September 2015) so that students and parents can make decisions about which extracurricular activities (if any) their children will  participate in.
